This generation has witnessed the highs and lows of human experience. We have lived in the most affluent society ever to exist on the earth; we have upheld our everyday heroes in their noble attempts to avert or mitigate tragedy, and we have watched tragedy unfold by the hands of people whom we find inexplicably evil. Our response to this panorama of the good and bad capacities of human life is often, and understandably, a confusion that nears despair. But despair is not the end of the conflict; there is an answer to the limitations of human life. That answer lies in another life that the human life was created to contain.

What does it mean to be regenerated? This question was put to the Lord Jesus after He answered a man's questions by telling him, "You must be born anew." Repeatedly, Christ told His followers that He was the life—or the zoe, the Greek word which connotes the divine, uncreated life. This zoe is the highest life in the universe. It is pure, eternal, unwearying, new, and satisfying; it is in fact the very God Himself. When we realize that our human life does not meet the demands we place upon it, much less the demands of God, we have the chance to let this life regenerate us within. This is what it is to be regenerated; to be born of God and thus receive His life. In these pages we seek to demonstrate that regeneration is our need and God's desire for us. We have one life to live, and our human life is not enough to live it. We must be born with zoe.
